CAMPING - AT HURST LAKE
View of Hurst Lake from the Air

In Memory of Our First
Haliburton Camp Committee
Chairman
Fredrick C. Hurst

"Something Ventured,
Something Gained,
Has Earned a Knights Reward
To Some a Fearful Hopelessness,
To Us - A Golden Challenge."

Dedicated by TheToronto Metropolitan Rover Scouts, August 5, 1956 A.D. [From the Cairn at Hurst Lake]

Introduction
Hurst Lake is located north and west of the Kennabi Lake Area where most Troop camping takes place. This small but peaceful lake was named for the first Haliburton Camp Committee Chairman, Fredrick C. Hurst and dedicated to his memory with a cairn and plaque on August 5, 1956.

What is the site like?
The road leads close to the southeast shore of the lake where you'll find a 20'x40' shelter (roof and wooden floor) situated on a rock outcrop overlooking the lake. The red pine forest here, provides a soft pine needle bed for your tent sites. In addition to the shelter, are a fire pit, kybo, picnic tables and a telephone connected to the camp system. Across the footbridge to the north is another camp area on a point which includes several patrol campsites.

Why camp at Hurst Lake?
The Hurst Lake campsite is an ideal area from which to operate for an experienced Troop or one with older members looking for a change and more challenge than is offered in the Kennabi Lake area. The surrounding area is excellent for perfecting map and compass skills or building confidence in wilderness and survival camping.

The Hurst Lake campsites are also trailheads for the Gibson Trail (which leads to High Falls and the west end of Kennabi Lake) and the Coopers Loop Trail to Beaver, North and Mislaid lakes. It makes an excellent base camp for Troops wishing to explore the Reserve beyond the Kennabi Lake Area.

Can we still take part in program activities offered at the Kennabi Lake area?
While the distance may limit the number of activities in which you will practically be able to participate, you are welcome to book activities, and are particularly encourage to join in Tuesday night badge trading, the Thursday afternoon regatta and the Friday night campwide campfire.

How can I book Hurst Lake for next summer?
Contact the Camping Department of Scouts Canada - Central Ontario Admin Centre.
