PROGRAM - DAY TRIPS

There are three main day trips that can be taken outside HSR. These are self-guided trips, though assistance is available upon request and staff availability.

Algonquin Provincial Park

The best day trip is to Canada's largest provincial park, Algonquin Provincial Park. It takes about an hour and a half to get there, but it's well worth the drive. First visit the Logging Museum for a short slide show and a walk around a trail with full sized examples of logging machines, techniques and living conditions then and now. Next have lunch along the highway or in the cafeteria at the Visitor's Centre where, afterwards, you can watch a short slide show, see exhibits of animals featuring interactive displays and games and visit the bookstore for lots of further information. Lastly, there are three short hiking trails in the vicinity of the Visitor's Centre that are fun, informative hikes.

East of Haliburton Scout Reserve

East of HSR visit an old time general store in Wilberforce or The Wilberforce Lumber and Veneer Company where you can watch a 16 foot log being peeled like wax paper off the roll. Nearby is The Richardson Mine, an old abandoned and hidden mine you have to find and hike to. Further away are The Martin Lumber Company at Elephant Lake, once the largest hardwood lumber mill in North America; an old general store in Maynooth; the Murray Bros. Lumber Co. in Madawaksa, a huge lumber mill and yard; Eagles Nest lookout in Bancroft for a great view.

West of Haliburton Scout Reserve

West of HSR visit the Haliburton Wildlife Forest and Wildlife Reserve to see an undomesticated pack of wolves in a huge fenced in area and participate in a variety of educational programmes related to wolves; climb the Fire Tower in Dorset for a great view and visit Robinson's General Store, an old time Ontario general store, also in Dorset.

Arrangements and Fees

Some of the tours and visits have to be arranged in advance and fees are charged as several of the locations. A more detailed description is available through the Central Ontario Camping Department or the Programme Office at HSR once camp opens.
